A 27-year-old Oahu woman will spend two years in federal prison for destroying two mobile phones and lying in court to protect her boyfriend, a convicted felon, after he was arrested outside a nightclub in November 2023 for allegedly shooting people with a pepper ball gun.

A letter writer accused President Donald Trump for causing the world to be in a crisis, an unnecessary war, much-needed oil and other supplies to be tied up in the Strait of Hormuz, America’s reputation to be diminished and prices to go through the roof (“Trump in charge has brought crises and grift,” Star-Advertiser, June 9).

It was nice to see a positive letter from a chronic complainer in Monday’s newspaper (“Thankful for shady trees along Hawaii Kai road,” Star-Advertiser, June 8). While the letter writer may be thankful for the shade, he isn’t paying attention to the road damage the trees have caused.

The obituary tribute to Army nurse Diane Carlson Evans, who spearheaded a memorial to all the nurses who served in the Vietnam War, is well deserved (“Army nurse led campaign for Vietnam women’s memorial,” Star-Advertiser, June 7).

Honolulu’s Department of Environmental Services hasn’t yet set a date for reopening a section of Patsy T. Mink Central Oahu Regional Park where the city dumped tons of storm debris cleared from North Shore communities in the wake of March storms and flooding — but soil testing has cleared the way, after no harmful levels of contamination were detected.

By many accounts, the 11.3-acre Kahauiki Village between Sand Island and Keehi Lagoon Park is doing just what was intended: help once-homeless people, or those at the cusp of homelessness, get back on solid residential footing.

It’s just about summer, and in Hawaii that means beaches, pools and other large, inviting bodies of water will see an influx of humanity eager to take advantage of tropical island weather and rollicking surf. And while fun in the sun is highly advised, pool- and beachgoers would do well to be aware of the dangers even shallow waters and small waves pose. This is an important reminder for keiki, who are particularly vulnerable to the perils of water-related accidents.

As El Nino officially takes hold in the Pacific, the National Weather Service on Thursday warned there’s a likely chance it could rank “among the largest El Nino events in the historical record going back to 1950.”
